Are you planning to leave the flat lands of the Netherlands for the towering heights of Indonesia? Climbing Mount Rinjani is a bucket-list adventure for many Dutch travelers. This guide covers everything you need to know specifically for visitors coming from Europe.
1. Flights from Netherlands to Lombok (LOP)
Currently, there are no direct flights from Amsterdam (AMS) to Lombok (LOP). The most common routes for our Dutch guests are:
- Via Jakarta (CGK): Fly KLM or Garuda Indonesia from Amsterdam to Jakarta, then take a domestic flight (Lion Air, Batik Air, or Garuda) to Lombok.
- Via Bali (DPS): Many travelers combine Bali and Lombok. You can take a fast boat (Padang Bai to Bangsal) or a short 30-minute flight from Bali to Lombok.
2. Visa Requirements for Dutch Citizens
Good news for Dutch passport holders! You can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) specifically for tourism. The cost is IDR 500,000 (approx. €30-35). You can pay in cash (EUR/USD/IDR) or by credit card at the airport arrival hall.
3. Travel Insurance Advice
Trekking Rinjani is considered an "adventure activity." Standard Dutch travel insurance (like ANWB or Allianz standard plans) might not cover trekking above 3,000 meters. Before you fly, ensure your policy includes:
- High-altitude trekking coverage (up to 4,000m).
- Medical evacuation (helicopter rescue) - this is crucial in remote areas like Rinjani.
4. What to Pack (Climate Check)
Coming from the Netherlands, you are used to rain, but tropical rain is different! Also, don't be fooled by the heat at the beach. The summit temperature can drop to 0-5°C.
Essential Gear Checklist:
- Warm Jacket: A down jacket or windbreaker is mandatory for the summit attack.
- Hiking Boots: Do not use sneakers. The volcanic soil is loose and slippery.
- Power Adapter: Indonesia uses Type C and F plugs (same as the Netherlands), so you do not need an adapter!
